Another pleasant visit, though less impressed with the inventiveness of the winter degustation menu. Excellent sole course peppered with caviar. The chocolate fondant was truly perfect.
The menu as a whole was blander than in the past. The lobster risotto was a lifeless goop with only its warmth and texture to redeem it. The fried Brie was so infused with anise seeds that no other flavors were evident.
Still an excellent restaurant, but not their best effort.

Our second visit made me feel guilty about my first, ambivalent review. The home-made foie gras was faultless, followed by the best deer filet I have ever had the pleasure to consume. The varied accompaniments encircling the main course were selected with true grace, including gently poached carrots, and thin medallions of chorizo. An inspired tray of lemon themed desserts completed a truly perfect meal. The execution and service left me expecting to see a star for this establishment in the near future.
Nothing at all.

Immaculate service to the highest international standard. Interesting menu. The scallop appetizer was very pleasant, and the filet de Biche was cooked to perfection. Excellent selection of cheeses.
Everything was quite good, however I was left with the lingering thought that the only thing setting Mathes apart from other higher-end Luxembourg establishments is the exceptional service. The meal itself was excellent, but not as spectacular as the restaurant's reputation would suggest. Nevertheless, I will go back.
Crêpe dentelle comme un mille-feuille selon Christian Le Squer
Christian Le Squer est l’un des neuf chefs trois étoiles de la capitale. Son restaurant, Ledoyen, est un magnifique pavillon édifié en 1792 dont la salle de style Napoléon III offre une vue imprenable sur les jardins des Champs-Élysées.
